Sleep of Reason: A Sculptural Performance

Written and Directed by Rachel Frank

February 18th and 19th, 2011, 8:30 pm

HERE Theater 145 6th Ave. (at Spring Street) New York, NY

Through a series of tableau vivants, Sleep of Reason uses the allegorical narratives in Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos and The Disasters of War series to examine the theatrical/performance implications of prisoner torture and abuse depicted in the Abu Ghraib photographs. Staged still scenes are briefly illuminated with a flash of light cutting through longer periods of darkness. Using masks, sculptural props and allegory, Sleep of Reason suggests the recurrent darkness beneath the rational and enlightened society of today.

Starring: Melanie Torres, Ruthie Scarpino, Angelica Pinna-Perez, and Dan Theisen
Stage Lighting Design by Greg Goff
Costumes and Sets by Rachel Frank

This performance/variable media art work was made possible, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Major support of the Franklin Furnace Fund was provided in 2010-11 by the Lambent Foundation Fund of Tides Foundation and Jerome Foundation.

Performed in New York City in 2010, Sleep of Reason uses the allegorical narratives in Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos to examine the theatrical/performance implications of prisoner torture and abuse depicted in the Abu Ghraib photographs. Referencing his works, the piece suggests the recurrent darkness beneath the rational and enlightened society of today.

Sub-Terrain

Curated by Andrew Thompson
Sept 10th Through October 5th
WORK: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan School of Art and Design
306 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, MI
Reception September 10th 6-9 pm
What lies below the surface of the physical, the perceptible, and the quantifiable? Invisible forces of the subconscious simmer until they come to a head in subtle circumstances of serendipity or in violent disruption, sparring with the perceived logic of life.
Sub Terrain is an all-media exhibition that invites artists to give vision to the invisible and explore the landscape of the immaterial and its convergence with the physical realm.
